Eyeless Chalice Fragging?

I have a chalice that needs to be fragged because it is large. However, it has not developed a lot of eyes. I was wondering if anyone frags eyeless frags and somehow encourages the development of an eye after? If so what is the best way to do so?

I've had some success fragging chalices with no eye. The bigger the frag, the better survival. I cut them no smaller than 1" in diameter and they survive. If they are 3/4", most survive. Less than 3/4" very few survive. Within a month, I usually get eye development.

Mycediums and "thin skin" chalices are a bit tougher to frag and survive without an eye.

Ok, thanks for the informative reply. I will probably not try it now that you say thin skin chalices more than likely will not do well when this procedure is performed on them.

I got a tyree pink watermelon a while back that had no eyes but it was a good sized frag. It started developing about four eyes within a few weeks of get it. I've heard of people losing them but like was said before I think the size of the frag has a lot to do with it.

You may have some success, but as everyone else has said, the size of the frag has a lot to do with the survival rate. I have made frags with no eyes before, but they took much longer to heal, and start producing eyes, than frags with eyes. The frags without eyes cannot manually catch food, and therefore must rely solely on photosynthesis for growth. Just my two cents.

I would just do a small cut it to sting it first. Then feed it like crazy for a week. Usually when I do that, a few new eyes pop out.

I have fragged eye less frags before and have never had any issues with the frag developing eyes

From my experience, I'm going to disagree with some of the posts stated above. I've always had success fragging eyeless chalice frags. Also as mentioned above, shortly after fragging, they tend to sprout eyes much quicker. Perhaps the chalice kicks into survival mode and develops eyes so that it can start physically consuming food vs relying solely on photosynthesis. Who knows. Tiny bugger size frags have a much smaller chance of survival, despite having eyes or not. Just like zoa's, some chalices are much more finicky when fragging, it just depends on how hardy that particular chalice is.

Ditto. I've had sucess with bigger frags but the smaller ones that are unable to support themselves through eating will sometimes die. also if there are any fluctuations, those little eyeless frags don't have enough mass to survive. shoot, I've had trouble keeping the little one eye boogers, let alone ones that can't eat.

I had a one eye frag of my Miami and something in my tank ate the whole eye it healed back up then grew a new eye so I would think its possible to frag a no eye piece good luck
