I mean besides the usual. Anybody have any unique, unusual, bizarre, funny traditions they grew up with?
My family is Scandinavian. My grandmother would always make our traditional Christmas meal of Lutifisk and Lefse. If you're familiar with Lutifisk, then you know what I grew up with. My father found it so inedible that he started his own tradition of "fondue ing" bits of wild game meats like elk and deer. He would break out the fondue set from the 1970s and fill it with peanut oil. My father and and grandfather would exchange barbs back and fourth like "smells like dead fish over there." "How's that roadkill treating ya?" It became a tradion in and of itself.
Mom played Tchaikovsky's Nutckracker on an endless loop. She collected Christmas ornaments year round and we each received our own individual one to hang every year. Over the years our tree was covered in the most unusual and non traditional ornaments. Now her collection from the 60s, 70s and 80s is probably quite valuable to some collectors.
All of our dogs (Labradors) got a steak and a bowl of vanilla ice cream.
Mom volunteered at the Children's Hospital and would take my brother and I down there every Christmas eve to help pass out presents to the kids. It was an experience that as a kid you don't really wrap your mind around but as an adult you remember and truly understand the lesson my mom was teaching.
Anyone else care to share?
