What is this? I bought it as a Seriatopora in November. Wondering if it’s a stylo. Whatever it is it grows incredibly fast. The first pic is from November 3 of last year. The second is today.

Are you sure that's the same coral?
That was my first thought but it’s the only one like it I have. I moved it to the other side of the tank because it was growing so fast and it promptly attached and changed it’s direction of growth since I put it on its side.

Careful with the stylos. They can spread in the water column and show up anywhere in the tank. Just keep an eye out for that and you will be just fine. Otherwise they can take over an entire tank.

I have 2 others that grow much more slowly. One is thankfully plowing down some palys that ended up in the tank. There are also several fast growing acros in there. Will stylo win over them do you think? If so I will frag this beast out and watch for new starts.

I think you are thinking of procillopora. They can reproduce through polyp bailout and pop up all over the place.

The ops picture looks like a stylo to me.

can they actually? i know pocci can (my tank became over run) i had a small random purple stylo patch in my tank that was about a quarter sized for a year or so until pocci grew over it

I thought the same, this was an issue with pocci's not Stylo's?

I have a Pocci also, but it looks different - the Stylo has thicker arms more like the OP's pics

Your thinking of a poccilapora, the green poccilapora. The OP's Pic could be a green poccilapora, the Pic is too blue to really tell.

Stylophora and Stylocoeniella are fine in a reef and don't spread out.

@voelter76 ,can you post a white light Pic?

Oh yea, there are other corals too with that propagation strategy. I’ve seen it and it’s not pretty. You will see it with someone who built a nice system and got board after a few years… then ignored the tank for a year. Pocc have the reputation but I’ve seen it with echinopora and it ended up being a spices tank. The stuff was growing on the glass and everywhere.

Will do so later. I also have a pocillopora that looks quite different. The piece in question has a much stronger blue tint than my damicornis which is bright green.
