That is funny indeed, I though the smell was created when the iron got in touch with water. Apparently that is not the case.

I am my own guinea pig, dosed 3ml of iron solution. 1 liter contains 40.000 ppm.. so 1 ml = 40 ppm. my tank is 400l.. so 1ml = 0.1ppm Fe.. dosed 0.3ppm Fe yesterday. The water became a bit cloudy after a few seconds. Today I also dosed 3ml. Unfortunately my test kit is already detecting 0.03 ppm po4.. however I am noticing algae growth on the overflow so there must be excess po4 anyway.

Apart from that I also started dosing glyserine. 3ml per day. Hopefully this will reduce no3 as it is currently 4+. Apart from that some vinegar and vodka is mixed with my topoff water as another carbon source (based on diy nopox). I do wonder how "strong" glyserine is compared to vinegar..

@Randy Holmes-Farley: I dosed 0.3ppm Fe without any issues. I reduced the amount to 0.15 ppm Fe as po4 is already low (0.03ppm). The tank becomes a bit cloudy after dosing Fe:


I did loose a shrimp after dosing glyserine. I wondered if you know how potent glyserine is compared to vinegar.. it is as liquid as honey and I dosed 3ml on 400l. The next day there was quite a bit of bacterial growth on the glass.

I don't know if glycerol has specific effects as opposed to just general organic effects, but since it comes as 100% glycerol, as opposed to 5% acetic acid in vinegar, I suspect the straight liquid is far more potent. Say, 20x. SO like 60 mL of vinegar, or even more, based on the structure not being as highly oxidized as acetic acid.

I made a double recipe iron(II)citrate... 100gr trisodiumcitrate and 50gr ironsulfate heptahydrate... it turn brown???? Shouldn't it be green?

Or is the trisodiumcitrate not acidic enough to keep it in the Fe(II) form?

@Randy Holmes-Farley do you have any idea why the color changes using sodiumcitrate? I do not notice any deposit collecting on the bottom of the bottom though. It is a brown/greenish color.
