So my female pencil wrasse (pseudojuloides splendens) is starting to get a faint purple hue on its back and a faint stripe behind its eyes. I'm expecting it's transitioning. The problem is, it's already paired up with a male. However, I don't think I even have a pseudojuloides splendens, I think I have a female pseudojuloides polynesica.

Whats's the difference between female pseudojuloides splendens and female pseudojuloides polynesica? They look very similar, but mine has a black blotch on the front of its dorsal fin, which I didn't see in some female pseudojuloides splendens photos. Could it be the pseudojuloides polynesica? I hope so, so I can have a trio of beautiful male pencil wrasses.

Im no expert but from what you say id assume it is a polynesica. It looks like that blotch is the only difference from what i can tell. Are you able to get a photo?

No, either it hides or it swims so frickin fast its a blur when I try to take a pic. Wrasses are too hard to take a pic of. I only have one decent pic of my male splendid pencil, but even then its bad.
