I am planning on getting a

Fluval Sea Mini Protein Skimmer for a 60 gallon tank, could i just get a HOB or canister and call it a day for filtering?

The Fluval is WAY undersized for a 60 gal tank and will not do anything useful.

If you don't have a sump and need a protein skimmer there are larger HOB versions that are available from other vendors.

However if you need to add a HOB filter for mechanical filtration, I'd probably just get a reasonable size Tidal filter.

With regular water changes and light stocking that would probably be okay short term.

The skimmers to small, but to your question....yes. You can get a HOB or Canister (canister will be quieter) and call it a day. 120G mixed reef running on 3 FX6's filled with LR rubble and a skimmer.
