not at all, anything more than 4-5 inches is pretty useless anyways, how long would it take something to get down that far without being eaten, converted, dissolved, you are trapping large particles (typically 200 microns and up) and those trapped particles immediately start to decay feeding the sand bed bacteria. If you feed heavy change the socks often or you will find the sand bed needs to be about 2000 square feet to handle it all lol

I feed 6 times per day in my tank with a 4" sandbed and it handles it just fine without a filter sock.

I prefer to use a filter sock just because it gives the water that polished look... I also change my pair of socks 2-3 times per week.

I like socks, they trap a lot of crap before it hits the skimmer. I have 7 I take one out every3-4 days and stick it in a bucket, when I have 6 I turn them all inside out and wash them on the heavy/hot cycle with a little bleach and a second rinse. They work great if you are willing to put in the effort of changing them out a couple times a week.
