Generally, felt socks will do a much better job capturing solids from the water column. Mesh socks are far easier to clean. Is their benefit to felt vs mesh/nylon
Pros and cons
Try some 100 micron nylon mesh sox rather than felt.
Felt seems to catch more in the fibers. The nylon mesh is more like net material.

Or you could try no sox, I stopped 3 years ago, except for after maintenance.
filter cupsIt kind of comes down to how muchcrapdetritus you want to collect, and what your parameters are. I use 2 of the same sized felt socks in my 125. I change them out every 3 days, and have enough that I wash them about once a month. BRS did an experiment that showed that even if the socks didn't overflow, nitrates rose significantly after 3 or 4 days as the stuff captured in the socks decomposed.
You can use mesh socks that don't collect as much detritus, but of course your letting more detritus through, and the 3 to 4 day guidance still applies.
I kind of like the filter cups with floss option, and may give it a try. Sounds easy, and hopefully won't be too expensive.
With 100 micron, it will clogged on most tanks in just one day lolThinking ill try the 100 micron nylon and see what i think
just hate to change when everything seems fine, but im not consistent on grtting filter socks changed
I use the 15" mesh ones @ 100 micron on a fairly clean 120g tank display, I get about 3-4 days between swap outs. Same pace as a felt sock. Just don't need to run them through the washer like a felt sock. With 100 micron, it will clogged on most tanks in just one day lol
No sock if have baffles in the sump where you can use filter sponges. If that doesn’t apply to you, you can try using a media cup and throw some filter floss in. Worse case if that clogs up after a few days, all you gotta to do is toss that floss out and replace it, it’s very cheap.Fishandreefing what do u recomend
Agreed...Every 3 days here and I have 6 of them for my 20gal IM Nuevo but I only use one chamber, the other one has a UV; wash them in hot water with bleach every Saturday in the washer...It’s going to happen with all felt filter socks no matter what you get…that’s what it’s suppose to do..I change mine every 3 days of so…I have about 20 socks
