Filter went bad

So my filter went down but I have a hob protein skimmer do I need to replace the filter or just run the protein skimmer it's been running about a one and a half years

What type of filter and what were you running in it? Personally I don't use a filter, but I do have a sump and use filter socks for my mechanical filtration, and could also run carbon etc. for chemical.

It's a hob filter I have some corals and fish

If you weren't relying on it for flow or chemical filtration I'd hold off on replacing it. Just my opinion though, I'm still pretty new to this myself.
