On any large tank I do it will probably always be T5's for me
What would you recomend, as far as t5, for a 90 gallon reef?
is there a watts to gallons ratio? I know that is a loaded question, it depends on depth, how far from the top its going to hang, and so on, but usually there are old school rules of thumb that have worked for a reason.

My tank is 48" long 18" wide and 24" deep
currently my SPS are roughly 10 inches or so from the top and my LEDs are less than 6 inches above the top (ramping up from 10%to 90%and back down to 10% over a 12 hour span)

I follow no ratios on watts to gallons. I think the most important thing for me is even coverage. If it was my 90gallon (which is the tank I had before this one), and I knew what I knew now back then, I would be using a 6 or 8 bulb fixture that is 48 inches long. Those are the 54 watt bulbs and the 6 or the 8 would depend on the width of the fixture, I am not sure which is more appropriate. This would allow you to have pretty much wall to wall SPS without worrying about how much light it's getting. I can't really comment on the LED schedule without knowing which brand you have.
