First Coral in tank - Duncan

after having my first salt tank for about a year I’ve now added two Duncan coral frags.

This is my first attempt at coral; frag 1 on the left and frag 2 on the right.

The flag on the west got picked on almost immediately by my juvenile emperor fish… So I think that’s why he’s a little rough for the wear. The second frag he hasn’t touched and he actually hasn’t gone back to the first one either so I think that’s a good sign. Maybe he was just a little excited at first.

Question is: how do they walk? How long do they take to grow over the circle disc frag bit?

This is my Duncan. About 20 mos. old One of the 1st corals in my tank. Only had 3 or 4 small heads when I got it. They grow pretty fast if they're happy.

most corals don't walk, duncan doesn't walk. It grows in a weird way, it will sprout little heads from its stem, and each new head will sprout new heads from their stems, and you will have dozens of heads all attached to the original head on the frag plug.

Here’s mine at about 18 months. It started out at four heads. My clowns convinced it to host them. They love spot feeding.

Duncan’s are easy ime, keep up with calc alk and mag you should be fine. Also make sure you start it on the lower side of the tank that way you don’t accidentally give it too much light

Yup, same experience here. Very peaceful coral, so you should be able to put other corals on the rock in no time. I have heard that they grow almost aggressively fast, and you may end up needing to trim them.

I was thinking maybe I should move the coral on the left as it’s not usually open, at least not as much as the one on the right - so maybe it just doesn’t like it’s home

Duncans are my favorite! I agree with what others have said. Mine like lower placement with decent flow - and love to eat.

Heres two photos of a fairly new frag I picked up in March. The first pic is from April and you can see the little bumps emerging under the crown. The second is from earlier this week.

I’ve moved mine a couple of times as I upgraded lights and flow. Both are best in moderation with Duncan’s.

If you want your duncans to grow quickly, tweezer feed the heads some Mysis shrimp. It entertains visitors and really leads to some fast growth.

Duncans are my favorite! I agree with what others have said. Mine like lower placement with decent flow - and love to eat.

yep that's definitely the best setup for duncans. I have found they can tolerate a pretty good amount of flow.
