First time setup of apex

do the apex probes need to be submerged while calibrating? or after I finish setup of the apex can I replace calibration caps? I have no water in my tank or sump yet, currently making water.

You can put the tips back on with the fluid in them. I would just wait till the tank is full to calibrate.
If the probes dry out you have to replace the whole probe. Not cheap.
