My green finger did this last week and now its bigger than ever. My toadstool is closed right now as a matter of fact.

Are you having a diatom or cyano bloom in the tank? It could be catching the algae in the water column. If no algae is anywhere id say its shedding.

There is a mild diatom / brown algae outbreak right now... its minimal but I dont see hair algae like this anywheres...

Either way i wouldnt be worried.

When he closes up for the night can I lightly remove it or should I not?

I dont manually remove the shed.
