How large is the tank
What was the time frame that the fish were added?
How old is the tank etc
What corals do you have?
Going to need a little more info

Did the fins look eroded or rotted away?

Picture of one of the dead or dying fish would be helpful.

they looked like it was cut with scissors

Could be a bacterial infection. A gram negative variety can spread & kill just as quickly as the worst parasitic infestation (velvet).
