Thank you to all that responded, so if i can only have one which do you think i would have more success with
Any of those will work if you can resist adding another and keep it to 1 fish.
This is sometimes very hard to do in this hobby though.

Any single one would be fine, personal choice. If also corals then that is another consideration.

Puffers are fascinating, and if it were me, that's probably MY choice for a tank with one fish like this.

I plan to add more fish but either the clown or the puffer would be my center piece

Hello everyone i was wandering what the first fish i should ad to my 40 gallon breeder aquarium should be, because i what to buy one cheap fish to put in my tank first just to make sure that the tanks good, and i not going to kill my more expensive fish. I really like damsels. Especially the domeno damsel, but the reason im asking is because i know they can be really aggressive. Im fine with alittle aggression but i just dont want it to get out of hand. I want to put a maroon clown and a puffer in the tank to, so if you guys had any ideas on some cheap fish recommendations i would really appreciate it.
Damsels chase and fight and dominos are the worse of damsels
Clowns are territorial and will bite and chase tankmates- Make them the last addition. Maroon clown one of the nastiest and will in time bite your hand/fingers and do have teeth
Consider chromis, firefish, cardinals, gobies and blennies.
40b tank at 36" not ideal for a puffer unless its a small spotted or similar which may nip coral

Do you think i would be able to get a puffer and a pair of normal clowns

A file fish is cool. Mine eats nori from my hand.
The cool thing with the clown is you could add anemone later.
If adding others then go with the puffer. You might like a pixi hawk or this file fish.
