if one were to intentionally cause a green hair algae bloom in a fish only with live rock tank with a few of those fish being algae eaters would this negatively effect anything besides looks? from my understanding green hair algae consumes nitrates and phosphates so wouldnt this just be a refugium of some sorts with the benefit of having food for fish to eat? if you could get past the look (i think it looks natural and wish i had any kind of algae besides coralin) then wouldnt it just be a benefit with no down sides to the fishs health?

I see no issue with that provided the green does not get to the point where it can zero out completely, your nutrients. We still need those things to feed our micro-fauna critters.

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
