I have a 29 cube and not sure about the Compatibility of an almost 3" Flame Angel. My plan is to upgrade at some point, but question is can I keep it with any following: firefish, dottyback, goby, blue chromis, clown, blackcap basslet, and mandarin?

That's a lot of fish for a 29 with some possible compatibility issues already. I recommend waiting until you upgrade before adding the angel.

I had a smaller Flame Angel in my 29 gallon biocube. Unfortunately, it died in a Brooks outbreak with several other fish. A lot depends on how many other fish you plan on adding to your tank. Definitely expect issues (ie: fighting/aggression) if you add another angel of any kind.

I dont have any fish yet
In that case, the dottyback and blackcap basslet will likely fight. Choose one or the other.

It will also be difficult to keep a mandarin in a 29g.

Okay, will wait on angel and mandi. I'll just go for a trio of chromis, maybe one clown, and one goby. I like blackcap better too if possible

That list looks better. Just add slowly to make sure the tank can handle the bioload.

I would skip the mandarin too! With 29 gallons you would just watch it starve =/

Yeah, I still have some learning to do before I get Mandi. For example, how to create a system with pods. I'm not sure that would work well with my current filter

Pods will readily populate even a vigorously filtered tank, as long as there aren't too many specialesed pod hunters.

Sweet! I will keep that in mind when I upgrade in a year or two to a 75-150 gallon. I've got some pretty Chromis scheduled tomorrow I have to keep alive for two years before hand.

I have a 40b with a 30g fuge. In the 40 is a 2"+ flame with a yellow tang, springeri dottyback, six line wrasse, bangai cardinal, 2 watchman gobies, 2 ocelaris clowns, a lyrtail anthia and a pair of manderin. Last fish was the tang about 5-6 months ago. All are well and get along fine. :-)

Sounds right at the volume size for angel but not the intended room. Can or should?

You could, but whether you should is up to you.

Without getting into the ethics of it all, I try to have a natural habitat benchmark

To me the fish set the rules. If the water is clean and the fish are not fighting....... don't see a problem. All these "rules" are made by another person. They are never infallible. Different tanks work differently for no apparent reason. I have way more fish then I'm supposed to. But water is clean and fish are happy. And no water changes or media other than carbon. So explain that...

I stated the benchmark for the exact reason that you bring "so explain that...." Is that good husbandry because you "got lucky" a few times. Certainly not a long term goal of mime until I can explain in specific certainty why? Or why not?
