To me the fish set the rules. If the water is clean and the fish are not fighting....... don't see a problem. All these "rules" are made by another person. They are never infallible. Different tanks work differently for no apparent reason. I have way more fish then I'm supposed to. But water is clean and fish are happy. And no water changes or media other than carbon. So explain that...
You're right, in that the fish set the rules, and by that there are some that behave outside of the 'norm'.

The stocking and compatibility that I suggest is drawn from personal experiences. I am able to see a number of different tanks in acrion, that vary in size and stocking. In my experience, at a certain stocking level, or certain species in certain size tanks, it is more likely there will be a problem. Not 100%, but definitely more likely.
Alright you got me, why?
In nature they use signicantly more space than is provided in a 40g aquarium.

10 years 3 forums and five pet stores that I visit once every week. And I agree with you there are definitely norms and exceptions. All I mean is if you want something bad enough give it a try. If it doesn't work you can always Deport one of the fish to a good home or back to the lfs. You should definitely do that with great attention though. We do not want to intentionally hurt fish.

I definitely did not get lucky. I have fantastic husbandry. I am at my tank at least an hour a day every day and spend at least 4 hours on one day every week. I have great attention to both my display tank in my 30 gallon refugium and I do what works. So as for whether or not I got lucky that is up to you to decide. As far as I'm concerned my perfect parameters most of the time and my attention that do the trick. As you can see I not only Break The Rules with multiple fish but also with my ridiculous number of every type of coral. I don't think I got lucky that many times. But that is exactly my point. To each his own and you are all welcome to think what you like and do what you'd like same as me. :-D
I stated the benchmark for the exact reason that you bring "so explain that...." Is that good husbandry because you "got lucky" a few times. Certainly not a long term goal of mime until I can explain in specific certainty why? Or why not?

Maybe represent that success with the future perspective in mind that a tank transfer will likely occur as they grow. Therefore larger is better and more cost effective

Thats What I meant by the fish will tell you.At a certain point there will not be enough space. And I assume that everybody in Reefing knows that larger is better. And will always eventually be the case. Even with any one Coral eventually will fill a tank. If you're unaware that a reef including fish will grow you are in the wrong hobby.

I have to apologize. Sometimes I get into sort of a defensive train of thought and it is hard to break. But I do see what you mean and yes I should have stipulated that the right conditions are needed in order to make it work until they outgrow it. Please forgive me
