I am redoing my tank and have run a ro line from my garage to the tank so I don’t need to have a ato reservoir under the stand anymore or the tunze auto top off pump system anymore. I am using a 40 gallon tank as a sump with no partitions in it. Just open from side to side. I need to figure out a way to hook up a float valve in the sump to control the top off. Any ideas?

Any plans to create a fail safe? I’ve read several posts of people flooding their systems by hooking up to an infinite water supply.

Did that on my first tank. Saltwater tank became a freshwater tank by the time I got home. Flooded the house too. Amazing that I'm still married AND she's let me upgrade twice.

This happened to me just last week. I bought a small separate RO to use for top of. Had it on a float just like you are wanting to do. Some how(not sure why) the float got locked open. Fortunately i was home and i am always paying attention to my tank and could hear a definite silence from my sump. I caught it at about 2+ gallons. If not it would have been deleterious! Would have killed all in my tank, Ruined my floor in my home.. Seriously, Get a ATO with as much redundancy as possible. I bought the new Neptune ATK2 It 3 forms of redundancy. I was lucky. Just saying from experience..

A very reliable DIY ATO can consist of 1 or 2 float switches (2 is best for redundancy - place one a little above the other)

and 1 float valve for freshwater inlet to your sump.

NEVER rely on a single valve or switch for an ATO.
