Is it better to have fast or slow flow in your refugium?

folks with separated refugiums from your sump, how do you control your flow?

I have a Y fitting coming from my return valve, that has a gate valve which controls the main flow to the fuge. My refugium is a 40 breeder with a coast to coast overflow. Under the overflow I have 1 sicce powerhead to prevent any dead spots and create a horizontal gyer effect. Seems to be working well for me so far.

Flow into my first section from the DT drain is very fast. I have three baffles to slow it down. Then I drop 1" to a large cheato section where the flow is decreased significantly. The I have one more baffle with 1" drop to my return pump and skimmer back to my DT. FYI my fuge is 110 gallons (72Lx17Dx16H)

So your sump is a 110, or the fuge section is 110 gallons? Either way that's pretty big. Wjat size DT?

Is there a recommendation for flow rates for flow going through the fuge and flow within the fuge?

I'm not sure I really understand the difference between sump and fuge, but my lower tank is 110. That has cheato, skimmer, return pump and my heaters. The cheato section is 36" long i think.

DT is 220.

Sump = tank below
refugium = the part of that tank below where you grow macro algae, have a DSB, extra live rock, etc.
also some people keep their refugium separate from their sump like @fragit does

I also have a bunch of live rock in my first section where the drain is (think this section is 24"). TBH I'd call my whole bottom tank a refugium and not a sump.
Sump IMO just is a tank with a skimmer, heater and return pump.

I'd like to know more about this as well... Seems like there is no right answer for everyone! Can't get a consistent answer.
