Fluval PS2 mini skimmer overflowing

Hi. I have a new Fluval Evo tank with PS2 mini skimmer. The skimmer has been running for two weeks, although during this time I had several hiccups with water chemistry, nutrient levels and water levels, so it hasnt really spent a longtime in stable conditions. No matter which combination of water intake valve position and air valve position I use, after a few hour it always overflows. The water level is a little above the shaded markings. I also tried reducing the water level to the minimum acceptable, the water inside the skimmer went down just to find it overflowing a few hours later. Any thoughts?
