My first exposure to mushrooms in a reef tank were the green hairy ones that started to take over my tank like a plague. So needless to say I was pretty anti-mushroom. But after seeing some various types on here at R2R, I have been giving shrooms a second look and really like rhodactis and some yuma. Would these be good if I was looking for slow growers. I just don't want anything that will go from like 1 to 30+ polyps in less than a year. I have read about the jawbreaker and how slow it grows but they are a little too expensive for me...:xd: Any others you can recommend that will not break the bank?

the really colorful yumas are great. they grow/reproduce realllllly slow. the only one that started to grow pups in my tank is a green one.

Yumas can reproduce fairly quickly under the right conditions. Back when I had an LPS dominant tank and ran a higher nutrient system, I had an orange yuma that reproduced like crazy. Now that I've transitioned to a low nutrient SPS reef, I haven't seen a baby since. The silver lining with Yumas is that if you notice babies popping up, the Yumas have some value for trades & LFS credit.

My experience with Ricordea (Florida) shows they are slow growers. With Ricordeas though if they reproduce, it's like 20 dollar bills doin' the nasty in your wallet and reproducing.

Yumas , flordas & hatian rics are all good choices and some of the more colourfull rodactrus, as stated above nutrients will have a large impact on groth rates
unlike discoma rics are fairly easy to get rid of & often have a lil $$$ value , note hary mushroons are rodactrus and represent the more prolific species as far as rodactrus seek species with limited or little avaliability & command higher prices & You will most likely have a SLOW grower
also note many people find Ricordea Yuma harder too keep alive let alone propegate

the rusty orange with blue/purple background rodactrus some times over priced & called superman or the rusty orange
with teal or lite blue center rodactrus could be good choices to start & can be found at reasonable prices

My upgrade from a 75 to a 220 has went from an sps tank to sps with a couple clams, to an sps with a couple clams and a couple acans to a tank with sps,lps and clams and now to a mixed reef predominately lps with some sps a couple clams and now mushrooms. I need to stop checking out all the threads here on R2R!!! At least I should have it settled by the time the 220 is up...lol.
