Forum grammar...

No one was directly called out, this was almost as much pun than anything.

The issues I am complaining about are things we all learned in k-8. Not forum or text speech.

People that don't speak English as a first language are obviously cut some slack with the humor.

You also have to see it from other people's perspectives. To some, it's literally like nails on a chalk board (as already brought up). I will survive, I have my own issues (OCD with regards to several things) as well. I was curious if anyone else suffers as I do.

Apparently i am not alone. Heck, my wife and father have their grammar and spelling issues as well. It's really not that deep.

Grammar is one of many reasons I do not lurk around much anymore. I never would consider myself good or great at grammar, in fact I'm pretty bad. However, some people just don't even try. I mostly have grown tired of seeing the same threads repeated over and over again and the original posters sometimes get aggravated at the answers. For the love of god, there is a search function people like to dismiss for that question about ich, quarantine, care on a fish, etc. These are reasons I removed myself from Facebook groups as well, when you point people to the direction of "Google" they get hostile.

I think people should always try to do their best, whatever level that is. If I detect someone is not trying their best to communicate effectively then I typically don't put much stock in what they have to say, and I'll generally skip over their comments. It might not be important to others whether I read their post or not, that's their call. I will say it's possible this concept never occurred before to someone who is reading this thread and they may try a little harder as a result of the discussion. What's wrong with that?

Read for content not grammar.

I love when people try to appear "verbose", but clearly did not pay attention in etymology class...

Verbose is when more words then neccacery are used to describe something. People don't try to sound verbose. There writing might be verbose.

Etymology is the study of words, their history and meanings. Etymology class has very little to do with if someone's writing is verbose or not.

Me too... Me too... Those are some of my many pet pieves. I have a huge "thread" on Facebook going of others...

"..." is used to continue an idea. One of my pet peeves is people who overly use "..." out of context.

I am not offended :D

My pet peeve is host/clownfish/anemone. And ya know what I have finally given up, same with marine ich.

It's all good, I was just trying to point out that for some writing, grammar and spelling are more of a challenge. Edit is my friend. :p

Is grammer your issue or people who don't Google before asking questions? Your comment seems irrelevant to the topic of grammer. You started off on topic for the first sentence, but it then went down hill.

I believe I made it pretty clear both annoy me. It appears the original poster was talking how people just don't care/try, that would include grammar as well as not using the search function for basic things. If you don't believe somebody neglecting the search function has no relevance to people "not trying" in general, that is fine.

EDIT: I am likely guilty of not using better grammar or the search function in the early stages of using forums. However, I figured out I messed up. I attribute that actually caring, as it seems a lot of people don't or they get very insulted when you try to steer them in the right direction. Thats grammatically or anything else you want to include. Grammar is just a part of it. Just my 2 cents.

Try speaking 3 languages and writing 2, plus being clinically Dyslexic... it's no fun :D

I am OCD with grammar and spelling - I understand forum and "text" speak and use it myself frequently, but...

Anyone else struggle?

I know I'm a grammar/spelling ****. I can't help it.

No you weren't clear. No the OP didn't say he hates when people don't try. He tried belittling people from his soap box. He did try to do some damage control when he was called out. There was no mention of Google or anything similar to "criticize people grammer" or "tell us what you don't like about peoples post"

You're amusing.

Again, I mentioned both annoy me. Whether or not you want to actually read and not take everything as an insult thats up to you. I also just explained in my last post how I tied the search function and Google into my post, you are welcome to read that as well.

That's elementary logic right there.

1) There writing, huh? You're also splitting a hair. People that try to speak outside of their level of comprehension was the message. Also notice the quotes placed around the word for "irony".

2)How might the study of words, the root (and language of origin) impact how one uses those words and more importantly, spells them?

remedial logic.

3)
... Is an example of forum speak. It indicates a pause.

Etymology word of the day: Hypocrisy.

One who accuses someone (wrongfully in this case) of attempting to belittle others by attempting (poorly) to belittle that person.

Don't like my definition? Here is the Webster definition for you.

http://i.word.com/idictionary/hypocrite

Please troll somewhere else. It is not that serious, this was more of a pun. No one is perfect, if you took the time to read between the lines rather than take shots you might know that.

Please leave the victim mentality at the door when participating on public forums. It's not flattering on anyone. (Taking offense so easily on the internet and inserting malintent where it was not)

Even the most serious of grammar police aren't grammatically perfect.

Your incorrect use of "there" is a great example. If I were attempting to belittle someone for poor grammar and incorrect word usage, I might look more closely. I also said that I am as guilty as anyone at utilizing forum and text speak, so it's not like I am trying to be a graduate level English professor

Calm down, and I'll take my "high horse" back now if you'll kindly return him :D

I certainly did not mean to appear arrogant or pompous and apologize if anyone took it that way.

I was simply starting a topic. The expected trajectory for this thread was jokes, poor grammar trolling, and perhaps a discussion about diminishing grammatical skills.

The only thing worse than someone that is arrogant is someone that is inherently negative and assumes/sees the worst in everyone.

3ford I hope you realize you portray all the characteristics you are complaining about. You started this thread to split hairs.

Etymology has nothing to do with being a hypocrite. Now you are trying to make it seem like I am the grammer police. You are the one that started a thread about it. I am the one that said to look at the content and not the grammer. I couldn't give a crap about peoples grammer I care about the information they are offering.

As I said earlier you show all the characteristics of what you are complaining about. Especially playing victim. You started a thread to belittle people and got called out about it. Then you start to make crap up such as hypocrite being the definition of etymology.

For the record I don't mind the lack of search function utilization, conventional wisdom shifts quickly in this hobby and the user base changes just as frequently. For more recent responses from different people, a new question may be necessary. Some common/redundant questions are mildly irritating but this forum is wonderful because the populace here is more helpful and less judgmental than other forums. We are more welcoming of "noobs". (That's not a real word I don't think I have to make sure it's in quotes).

I also tolerate redundant questions because some newcomers may not be aware of the search function. It's also irritating when someone takes the time to reply to use them search function rather than contribute something relevant or helpful to the thread. That type of crap belongs on reef central, IMO.

Also if you google a question you'll often land at reef central, and despite their feelings otherwise, that group of cliquey folks with no differing opinions are NOT always correct.

But yes 10 of the same questions posted daily is somewhat tiring and irritating to a degree I see your point.

I see that reading comprehension is not your strong suit. For more reasons than one, the person you describe that has a wife on a shooting forum is not me.

That's a pretty backward, nasty, and unnecessary comment towards that individual. Why would you attack someone's wife?

It's clear you are one to resort to personal attacks rather than a healthy, constructive debate so you can now argue with yourself.

I will post some happy photos of my family and I. I hope no one is affected by the happiness (lack of negativity) displayed here.

The very small baby is not mine it is a good friend's child.
