Foxface exude excess toxins

Hi guys

Kinda a weird question. Do Foxfaces constantly produce toxin, abd if so, do they have to exude it to avoid build-up?

My magnificent Foxface routinely just kinda ‘hunkers down’ then releases strings of what I assume is toxin from his dorsal spines. Only ever seen him do it away from other livestock- not in response to being chased or bullied.

I see the stuff float around for a few minutes then it dissipates. Maybe once every 2.5-3 weeks

Any info on this?

I think that your foxface is just shedding the mucous layer around its venomous spines. Take a look at this lionfish doing the same thing: . It shouldn't be anything to worry about!

Yup- that’s what it looks like.

Are we sure that’s mucous from around the spines age nit coming from the spines themselves?

Rabbitfish / Foxface don’t exude any toxins into the water but do shed their mucus coats a fair bit. Nothing harmful unless you touch their spines directly

Agreed. My One Spot does it periodically from different areas of it's body.

Yep and I have been stung by one before and it’s painful but that was only because of a direct sting from its spines

Huh. I’ve never actually seen him in a cocoon. He wedges himself pretty deep under a ledge and turns black, but I’ve never seen the mucus
