I wish I would have started in this hobby when I was 18.
I agree, prices can be ridiculously high but deals are out there. Trading I and buying from local reefers is the best ime.

No not at all it was that Pappy guy. I am just expressing my opinion. I have been in the hobby for over 40 years and i am just making a statement. I enjoy the hobby as many people do but some of us cannot afford where this hobby is going.

I'm sorry I offended u it was not my intention at all. Lol I totally agree with the buggers for $700, etc...I mainly will buy from hobbyists and very rarely a Lfs. I do have to say there are super good deals out there if you know where to look and can network out of your area;). For instance I would never pay for an acro 1/2" for $100. However I just got about 12 (pink lemonade, atl mirabillis, GARF, Shawn Bennett yellow tort, etc...) for on average about $25-$30 a pieces. I don't think anyone has to settle for less just keep an eye out for good deals or save up for something you really like. Ill be selling some high end zoas soon at a great price. Ill pm u before I post and you can have the pick of the litter if u want!

Most of my tank is stocked by local reefers who have bought the corals at their original price and been generous enough to sell frags at a much lower price. I love the frags I see online, I just can't justify to myself paying the online prices

I agree with the general consensus here. Prices are way too high and thats why I only have one "designer coral". I actually go out of the way to look for brown out big cheap sps frags and most of the time I get amazing colors. That and I like to trade. I like this sort of topic, especially as a teenager it can be tough to afford the hobby. Thanks for the thread Mike!

Yeah haha thanks! I got into the hobby crazy young and grew a sense of what I want and how much is a reasonable price. Its kind of nice to go into an lfs and have them ask me questions about a certain fish or coral

I agree 100% Honestly..... I go to one "Designer site" he took bam bams... put his name infront of it and changed the name, then charged $40pp... Even worse took radioactive dragon eyes.... One of the most common zoas.. put his name infront $15pp... its kind of redic to think people pay so much. But like said before, if you have enough money to use some as toilet paper you can splurge... Me being in college means me no spendy a ton on corals.

In all reality though.. all the vendors do is take wild colonies, frag them out and sell them for insane prices... Find a mother colony of some rainbow chalice and your a millionaire...

To be honest, I avoid buying from dealers who import wild colonies. **** makes me sick, when modern aquaculture is to the point where we could sustain the hobby without further damaging reefs. The lack of awareness is offensive. Hence the reason I trade before I ever buy, because I know it is a few generations out of the ocean and has been more than spread amongst hobbiest and prevented further harvesting.

I give myself $100-$150 per month for my Reef Tank. This includes maintenance items too so I am always looking for deals. Unfortunately my tank is young and barely stocked with any coral to be able to trade just yet. But when I am ready I have a friend on R2R that wants to swap back and forth.
I usually just pick up what my LFS hasn't been able to sell. I got a pretty good deal on a colony of fire & ice with a tag along colony of what looks like blue angels. They just told me the other day that there were some more items they would disco for me. LOL should I feel trashy!?!? NAH!!!!!!!!!

Oh and I own a KIA!!!:tongue:
