So I’m planning to give a freshwater bath before going into QT for my pair of clown which currently have ich. I was told by my LFS to do a freshwater bath but with tap and obviously conditioner. They also told me to use a PH buffer to make sure my PH matches that of my DT.
Their reasoning why not use RODI is because this is more stressful for the fish as it is stripped of every element/mineral and it’s too pure. This could result in more of a shock to the fish. Is any of this true? Should I use RODI or tap with conditioner?

I'm far from an expert on this, but if you are treating for ich, I don't know why use the freshwater bath. It isn't going to do anything to the ich. What you do in the QT will be what cures the ich.

Freshwater dips might cause osmotic shock to saltwater ich if I am not mistaken. It 100% works the opposite way, used it many times to great success.

They said the freshwater bath would help make the adult ich specs fall off and provide some relief for the fish, then going straight into QT with copper for 30 days

Like I said, I'm no expert. My fish have been living with ich for years. I just keep them healthy and they may break out once a year for a few days. I've actually never noticed ich on any of my fish other than my tang.

Years ago when I did actually do a few freshwater dips, I used RO water with no ill effects that I noticed. I personally wouldn't use tap water since there might be something in it that harms the fish and the conditioner doesn't neutralize.

You use RODI water with a tiny pinch of baking soda to stabilise the pH
