I just lost a 4" x 4" purple Bonsai colony. I think its because I brought my Mag up to fast. From 1100 to 1300 in 2 days. I don't know for sure but its the only thing I did. O cut 4 frags because it was RTN'ing, now the frags are RTN'ing. I wish I had some pictures of the colony but it never same out good. It was hard for me to get a good picture.

I havent had an issue with bringing up my Mg too fast before, Alk yes, Ca no, and Mg no. Its a possibility but I havent had it happen. Sorry for you loss, love those corals. RTN is a fickle thing, sometimes, no rhym or reason, just decides "i'm done living for now" and thats the end of it

I doubt it was any thing to do with raising your Mg. Mg has little effect on raising or lowering pH. Alk does thats way you con get RNTing from raising it too fast. I have raised my Mg alot more than that in to days.

I don't think it was the Mg either. You have my sympathy, though. I got up yesterday morning and when I checked the tank, the bonsai was bone white and had completely RTN'd overnight, about the same size as yours.

And it is basically where the flesh of the coral just sloughs off of the skeleton in a matter of hours, in SPS. For the most part, I don't think there are any widely accepted, well-known theories as to why it happens, it just does sometimes.

Mine has always done best in medium light and flow, when I've given it too much light it lightened up and lost it's deep purple color
