I just hard plumbed for the first time and replaced my return vinyl hose. Now I want to redo the drain, which is using a crappy ball valve & was not glued so I get salt creep at the joints. I plan on doing a simple drain with 2 90 degree turns to go into the sump. The system has a emergency pipe as well, but I don't think it's a true herbie, just durso + emergency.

Question is, where should I place the gate valve to get the best siphon & eliminate noise. Should it be straight after the bulkhead, after the turn or when the line is going straight down into the sump, or does it not matter? I was thinking it may make noise if the water is not a full siphon after the gate valve.

Also I'm guessing I should remove the durso upside down U in the overflow to get a siphon, is that correct?

Put the valve where it is easy to use and get to.
