Have been out of the hobby for 20 years, now getting back into it, I am getting a 5x2x2 tank and planning the stocking list. LFS has a gem tang that I have always wanted when I had my old tank, they have had it for 8-10 months and it is feeding and in the tank fine. So I might get that one once the tank is up and running and cycled.

Besides the Gem, I am also looking at a Coral Beauty, Chocolate Tang or maybe another tang, just not sure what will coexist with the Gem. Was looking at a flame angel but again not sure what they will be like with the Gem and I would rather the Coral Beauty then the Flame, don't think I can have both. Other fish, couple clowns, gobies, wrasses,

Corals will be mostly LPS, or that is the plan right now, maybe the odd SPS but I don't plan to have major lighting

My biggest question is will my small list live together peacefully? What other fish could I explore to go along with the gem tang. I think I am about a month away from getting water into the tank to start a cycle.

Cheers!

Two thoughts

Buy the gem and add the others and see if it works out. Bring home the winners after the trial.

I think gem’s are not necessarily LPS friendly. I have always wanted a Gem but every time I have seen one at a fair price/ deal I have always talked myself out of bringing home a coral eater or a possible bully fish.

I have a Gem Tang that i got from a friend who had it for 5 years before me. Added him to a 200g tank with a Fox Face, large (forgot type) Tang, Swallowtail Angel and a few other smaller fish - he's very peaceful, doesn't fight with other fish even when haggling over nori, doesn't nip LPS or any other coral. Maybe i was just lucky but it's by far my favorite fish in the tank.

I don't have a gem tang but have had a purple for over 6 years. It is currently housed with 4 yellows, convict, naso, and vlamingii and they all get along great. I keep a Flame angel and coral beauty together in the same tank. Tank is larger tho 84x30x25"

thanks guys. Back when I had my last tank the tang police would have been after me. :)

I have a gem with a coral beauty and other various fish but those two are a stunning duo…
No issues with the gem nipping any corals. Jimmy the gem even protects my tomini tang from my bully two spot tang I love that gem tang so much I have it tattooed on my leg lol
