My goby went missing yesterday I found him in the filter area over the balls. I put him back in the tank. He was acting Ike normal. Today he has this white area on him. What is it? What can i do?

He got injured on his little adventure. Assuming that your parameters are good, he will heal up on his own within a few days.

As you have now found out, engineer gobies can be quite the escape artists. I would suggest using a mesh screen in front of your overflow. Vinyl gutter guard from HD/Lowes works very well for that. You also need a good cover on top. A DIY screen top is your best option there. It will allow for gas exchange and blocks very little light while still creating a pretty much escape proof top. Eggcrate (lighting diffuser) is a very poor choice for this not only because the ~1/2" square openings can easily be gotten through but also because it is, well, lighting diffuser.

Remember that within a year or so it will be about 12" and as big around as your thumb. It will be able to tunnel around/under just about anything in your tank, especially if your rocks are on top of the sand. If they are sitting on the glass there will be much less chance of a rockslide.

Looks like I have some work to do. Thanks. I moved the top a few minutes ago and he leaped straight out into the filter.

I moved the top to see what I need to do for a screen top and he leaped out into the filter
