Hey all was hoping for some experiences here, can’t seem to find a whole lot on the Goldentail. So I’m setting up a tank (60b) for an eel, specifically it started as a snowflake and began to gravitate toward a white eyed. Yesterday at the lfs we saw this Goldentail, a ton of personality but definitely aggressive. He was housed with a dwarf lion and snowflake. Ultimately we just want a blue spotted puffer and flame angel to go with the eel. I would love to try and package deal the two eels but not sure how that’d work out with the dimensions. Any experiences with likely hood of this eel taking out the other two fish? I was told he was fully grown, was not that large though but couldn’t see him entirely since he was under his rock for the most part.

Thanks for any input!

Or do I go for the snowflake eel/skeletor?tank just cycled, those with experience do you tend to start with cuc or go straight to the eel? Filtration is a tidal 75 with custom cut porous sponges based of the aquarium coop hack. Do have an extra 75 in case filtration needs to be increased. Black sand bed and live rock as well. Trying to keep the tank simple. Any input would be awesome!

I have doubts for the dwarf lion going with a 2 feet eel and i would not recommend that, a flame angel is an absolute no go, I have seen successful tankmates with a puffer, but also some horried sightings, as long as the puffer is atleast twice or even better thrice as big as the eel? sure.

The snowflake or the skeletor are both pebbletooth eels with the main diet of cuc (though most leave snails alone) crabs are one of their favourites, you can shape the cuc depending on your eel choice (though I do not recommend 2 eels in a 75 just a thought for concern)

Hey thanks for the response, I figured it was a bit of Hail Mary and didn’t want to push the tank especially with a hob set up. I talked fairly extensively to @littlefoxx prior to going back to the lfs. Definitely decided only one and not to go with the fang tooth or skeletor and stick with the snowflake. Ended up with a blue spotted puffer a day or so prior and they’ve been great with the eel only briefly tasting the tail of the puffer .

Definitely going to have to be selective on the next fish but will likely keep it at around 3. Feeding heavy and running nitrates around 20-30 and phos off the charts on the Hanna. Haven’t run lights on the tank until the last week and only running one radion on the opposite end of the eel at 20% to see how the tank reacts when light is introduced. We’ll see how it goes lol.

That briefly tasting is a no go, that is exactly how a fish can get extremely stressed, i recommend that you keep a close watch on the puffer since stress is one of the main causes of deaths and diseases.

The snowflake is a great eel to get some first hand knowledge before diving into the other more expensive and aggressive types, though careful, they are not reef safe and can or will eat a small fish if hungry enough or malnourished

Well I’m trying to feed the eel based on I believe yours, lionfish and littlefoxxs previous recommendations of every 2-3 days for feeding of the eel. It was right at 2 days and it was need up going into a slight feeding frenzy, I don’t think the prior feeding was enough and it was an instant let go once the eel realized it was not his food. Has not happened since so I’m hoping this was a one time thing.

Eels are very good at letting you know when they want food! How big is the eel you ended up getting? May need to go to every other day if its a juvenile until it gets bigger. Ive done that with all my eels :)

Hey thanks for keeping tabs lol, hope the tanks are doing well! Yes I believe it was an accident, did not look like an aggression thing at all. I did go with a juvenile of about 6-10” and have went to every other day. Seems to be doing better with this schedule and has let me know when he’s over being fed.

Yeah they grow pretty fast, my white eye shot up from about 10 inches to 18 or so very fast. When he got to be around 18 inches he showed less enthuasim to eat every other day and moved to every two days. Now all 4 eels are on every 2-3 days in general
