Nice shroom man. Digging all the gems your throwing in. St tomas is the only species i haven't been able to cut and frag bit that could have been for a million reasons at the time. Can you get a close up of it? I have the JF minecraft looks very similar to the one you have. Still one of my top 3 shrooms of all!

Thanks! Perhaps ours is a JF Minecraft and not a St. Thomas??

Ahh no looked real similar in pic under other lighting. Minecraft is also a St Thomas. Different vesicle structure and color for sure. Your is nice.

So you are more knowledgeable than I, would you say ours is a St. Thomas or something else?

Time to frag a Jaw Breaker:

First cut the disc on the bandsaw so I can snap it under the foot:

Nice, not as clean as I had hoped, but should be ok (I got three frags) one was not attached so I put it in the cup with the Frankenstein

So you just cut the jaw breaker like pizza slice? Lol

Might be. I got reefers on the "other" coral forum telling me it is not a St. Thomas but a hairy Rhodactis??
From my understanding St Thomas shrooms are a particular genus of Rhodactis shrooms so I suppose they are also correct.

I dont use iodine. In fact when I have heard of mushrooms melting, they have used iodine. Is there a benefit of using it? I use a clean cutting board and a fresh (or cleaned with hot water) scalpel. And I try to minimize time out of water and any other stresses.
Cheers! Mark

I actually have no idea what the benefit is. Last time i researched cutting mushrooms I read about it/saw it in videos. I assumed it was to prevent bacterial infections. Anyway, thanks for sharing. I was curious to what your process was since it seems successful.

The Jawbreakers look great! I am getting some shroom melting in one of my reefs though - no idea why???
Man idk. The only shrooms I've had melt on me where frag shrooms. And that could have been for alot of reasons my system has been through alot this last year and all out of whack so it could have played alot into those couple losses.
It only makes sense that freshly cut frags are put under alot of stress, open to bacterial infections. Some may even be unhealthy before cutting. I think a solid well established mature tank would be best place for frags to heal.
When you say melting which ones are melting? Frags? Showing any signs of tissue damage?

The ones that disappeared are a Jawbreaker and Gonzo. Neither was a frag. I am thinking I will just do more water changes for a while.
Gonzos have been one of the most tolerant shrooms for me by far. Once settled in they multiply like crazy.
Jawbreakers almost always have a tendency to detach and float on me. Especially during shipping and entering my system. Jawbreakers are always hit and miss for people and wouldn't reccomend them in a higher nutrient, immature tank. I think low nutrients and tightly ran established sps tank is probably best for JB's.

Did you see them melt or just disappeared? Chances are the JB will show up sometime if it hasn't been sucked up into pumps.
