The range for most tropical SPS is approximately 74 to 84 F. Any higher or lower and you risk bleaching. One paper I read showed the maximal growth rate to peak around 77 F (at least for the corals tested).

One thing to bear in mind is that always keeping corals at 78-80 F decreases their ability to survive heat stress, as has also been shown in the literature.

I really don't think it matters as much as keeping it stable, as long as it is within the "safe" range.
