I was collecting fish food the other day and scooped this guy up. Apparently these pipefish are everywhere but this is the first time I ever caught one. Pretty excited about the fish, I wanted one for a while. Hopefully I can catch another one.

A little side story. A few weeks ago I caught what I thought was a pipefish but one I got home I realized it was a needlefish.

Here is the needlefish which I thought was a pipefish.

you know pipefish aren't easy to care for right? especially wild caught ones?

Where do you live? I am from Florida and you can catch them in estuaryish places. The best thing to do is to take a net through turtle grass. You can usually get some seahorses too but those are harder to find depending on where you are. I never had good luck with the pipefish but had a successful seahorse tank for quite a while. They are really fun little guys to watch.

The needlefish are a lot of fun and eat almost everything. You have to watch them for picking on the other fish though.

That is a common northern pipefish. You can collect 87 of them with each swipe of a two man net. I don't have a lot of luck keeping them but a lot of people do. Good luck

The needlefish was cool but it was eating all my silversides so I dontated it to a friend of mine. I hope the pipefish will do well. It is eating crushed pellets and I work on the bay so I grab pods on my lunch break. I also run my tank at 65f so hopefully that will help. I will keep everyone updated good or bad.

This just seems sad...

Cheer up TomatoSauce, life is to short to be sad.

I wish I lived where I could catch those. Someone told me there are seahorses in the Chesapeake bay though.

Pipefish are fairly easy to care for just need a nice pod base to keep them alive and a large tank 75G or more with tons of live rock. Going on 3 years with my dragon face have yet to feed the little guy.
