Got my first coral before I was ready

well my wife and kids went shopping for a birthday present for me Yesterday. They must have gone to my local fish store because they came home with a bag of water and a little coral frag (I think that is what you call it. ) .

I wasn’t really ready for it (I planned for June timeframe before I added any) and my tank is just finishing it cycle (my nitrites are zero and the brown diatoms are disappearing).

Anyway I couldn’t let it die so it got put in the tank. I hope it survives. I don’t even have any idea what it is lol.

My resident clowns kept photobombing my picture lol.

Gsp is really easy to take care of and grow. I have been in the hobby for only 5 months and I have a decent chunk of gsp. Use caution tho it will grow crazy fast if the conditions are right.

Agreed, GSP is very hardy and should be ok. Plus it isnt too pricey so hopefully they got it for cheap in case something happens. Just be careful where you put it, that stuff can spread like wildfire.

Thanks I put it on a chunk of rock I hope will be mostly covered by it. Let’s see if it keeps. I am sure they didn’t pay much for it :)

I need to say thank you. After having a bad day at work, reading this thread just put a smile on my face. The clownfish aren't going to be out staged by a GSP frag, LOL!!!

What a great surprise from your loved ones! I myself have a patch of GSP in my 180 sps tank which abides by where ive wanted it to stay for 2 years now. Some say it spreads like wildfire but i dont find that to be the case in my tank. Happy birthday to you!

If the tank will support fish it'll almost definitely support green star polyps. It was my first frag 3 months ago and it has already doubled in size. I love it even though I know its considered a weed by some. Be sure to isolate it to one area, or on one single rock. It can overtake a rockscape. Cheers to your first coral!

Definitely green star polyps. Very easy to care for and grows fast when happy. Not to mention it looks fantastic.

Happy b day. Keep that on an island as it can grow all over. As it grows on the sand you can easily frag it .

It will be fine. I got Some with live rock shipped overnight on a bus and used to start/cycle a new tank, it survived and thrived.

Looks like a good start if the polyps are already out. Sometimes GSP can be stubborn and not show much of itself for a bit. I thought my first couple of frags died and removed them but now I believe I just didn't give it enough time. Now it's growing like crazy on a sand bed island. Good luck! :)

Nice gift! It'll be ok, they grow like weeds (as mentioned) even on an island they can creep across sand so be prepared in the future to prune it. PS: love the photo bombing clowns
