Hi there! Welcome to the fishy family! How old were the fish? Did you add any new residents in the process?
Most likely it was a mini-cycle or you kicked open a pocket in the old DT taking out the old rock and spiked ammonia in there before getting them out.
You may never know exactly... but today is the day to start over, right? I'm sorry for your loss.... these are our scaly buddies. The new tank looks good so far!
