I've believe I've read they only spread sideways & upwards from the originals. Is that correct?

What do you mean sideways and upwards. GSP will grow and carpet anything it comes into contact with. Some variants can even form branches by folding in on itself

I mean it doesn't spread downwards, or at least that is the question I'm asking?
 
I have branching GSP. They can be easily controlled with regular maintenance. Snip snip flush
 
I totally missed the sway when I changed my scape. One of my favorites.
