GSP - long tips

Hi all,

My gsp is slow growing but "full" as you can see.

However, it doesn't have those long sweeping tentacles that flow in the current so nicely.....i see this on other gsp...

Why?

There are multiple types of GSP! Looks like you have a shorter version.

Looks fine to me. There are long polyp style ones and shorter polyp ones.

There are different types. Mine looks and moves like tall grass.

I will disagree with long vs short GSP. I have a lot of GSP that has grown over 2 years. Some areas are extremely long flowing, other areas are short and are from the same original piece. I suppose it could be light or flow causing the difference, but really don’t know?

Here are two pictures….first image is long flowing, second is short.

Hard to capture great detail but, the long polyps are an inch or longer while the shorter are little stars without flow. It has to be the “local” conditions that causes the difference, both examples are same GSP in different tanks in a connected system.

Chsub......that long grass is exactly what I wanted....and bright green...mine is green but not like yours. What par readings are you getting?

Not Chsub but this is some of mine. At around 20 seconds you can see how mine looks and moves. It started as a small piece and now needs trimmed back from the weirs every few weeks. Par on the coral up there is 500+ so the GSP should be getting close to that. There is also 6 powerheads in the 3ft tank so there is a lot of flow. Flow seems more important than light with mine. Mine does fine in lower light but has never done great in low flow.

I don’t have a par meter, but if you send me yours will be happy to take readings….haha!
I really don’t understand why it grows differently. I thought maybe vertical vs horizontal placement but both pictures are vertical placement, both are fast growing and both in strong flow. My guess is moderate flow, medium light and vertical placement so detritus doesn’t settle on it gives the longest polyps.

Another picture of the longest polyp flow with the conditions I described, not the brightest light in my tank or the strongest flow especially compared to the short polyp growth; but good brisk flow.

I have the white star GSP and green star GSP , I think they both get long polyps , flow is usually what makes them long in mine case. Also try to get the green star polyps or metallic green gsp

Interesting. I thought of putting some in the sump with a different light to test just that.

Some great tanks and GSP. I wonder if it's a light issue because I've got plenty of flow.

Hello, I am planning to get a GSP wall started up in my nano tank. How do I get it to have long polyps , can someone give me like a list or like the best advice, because I am seeing a lot conflicting opinions
