GSP

Hi All!

I brought home my first few corals yesterday including a chunk of GSP. The goal was to hopefully have it cover the back of my tank (one day)

However, while the other corals are doing great the GSP looks like a piece of purple leather. Nothing has happened and it’s been in the tank for 2 days. I know that at the store it looked like beautiful grass but right now after 2 days they are just scabs in the tank. Is this normal? My plan was to put them in a rock using a frag plug just to “get them started” and then move the plug towards the back glass and hopefully have it start taking up the back glass. Any suggestions are welcome

Params all look fine for GSP. Ive had absolutely bonkers numbers before and my gsp always made it through.

When gsp is closed up it looks like why you are describing. Give it time and it will open up.

You could grow this stuff in a toliet bowl, it's just being fussy and this too shall pass!

One thing I wl say is light, what is your lighting situation? If anything my gsp is more responsive to lights than parameters swings. That and my crabs/urchin harassing it.

interesting levels. In my opinion with out pictures. My best guess is two things. One it’s still not happy from the move. But two I see nitrates and phosphates are a little low for GSP. They do kinda like dirtier water. More 15-20 nitrates and .1 phosphates. Just my opinion. I would leave it alone and see what it does. It could be shocked from the light change depending on par difference. It is pretty hard to kill GSP once its happy, just getting it acclimated is where it can be angry.

The 2 zoa frags and the Hammer I have are doing great. I’m going to start dosing calcium slowly to try and raise that up before adding more corals. I was just concerned as to why these GSPs aren’t opening yet. Would I be crazy to just glue a chunk of it directly to the back glass?

It took my GSP 5 days to open up the first time. Way longer than the other corals I added, but since it opened the first time it’s a solid one now. I would give it some more days without worries.

I do agree that gsp does like dirtier water. I'll have to test my phosphates tomorrow but my nitrates have been absolutely bottomed out and my gsp looks gorgeous. I just shared a few pictures in my tank thread as an example.

People have told me leather corals are very temperamental, my gsp has always been as temperamental as my leather corals. One day it just decides not to open and perfectly fine the next. My parameters don't swing that hard and fast so that's not the issue.

I wouldn't see any problem in gluing a piece to the back. I had started doing that in my tank but the piece I've had back there was on the ground today. I think I have my urchin to blame for that but will try and restore it tomorrow!

Triple post. I think this is just it being fussy from acclimation more than anything else. It'll be open in no time.
