How often do you hack out poor performers? I have a Wet Thumbs, mother of pearl, which is supposed to be kind of like a Miyagi tort, but is just a brown except for the tips. It's also growing and encrusting faster than I think it's value to the prime real estate it currently inhabits. It's been there for a year, and I am ready to use the bone cutters to move as much as I can and prepare the area for a new better frag. I'm not marking this up to a failure of the frag, I'm sure this is a function of my reef keeping, but at a certain point I have to accept reality that I'm not going to be able to color this up; and if I do, it's still just a mediocre coral compared to what I have coming this week!

I think the mistake is mis-judging what frags you might have in the future, and not moving poor performers around when better frags come along. I know some have fancy systems for mounting frags and being able to move them, but for mere mortals, hack and chop is I think as good as I'm going to get!

Go for it. Toss it in the back of the tank and come back 6 months later and be shocked when it colors up. Lol..
