What makes milipora hairy? Some people have mili that looks like moss is growing on them while others just looks like a stick . So if any of you mili fans have pics of your mili hairy or not and can tell placement the type of flow it's gitting and what you have for flow and light I think it can help out some people that won't the hairy mili but don't know what to do to get it that way

I believe its all about polyp extension, more extension you have, hairier it looks.

Like this? The pumps were momentarily shut off for this pic but its even more hairy when the pumps are on but then you can't get a clear pic

- it's all about flow - they like a lot, the more the better just short of being directly blasted by a pump

Ya flow, water quality are some big factors. As well as light. I have mine in high flow areas. It's odd, I have two beside eachother, one is extremely hairy, the other one isn't really hairy at all. Milli's can be finicky

I think some millies just have longer polyps than others. I could be totally wrong. But then again, Ive added some frags to my tank and they were super hairy for the first couple of weeks and then then they dont extend the polyps quite as much after that. I do also believe it might have something to do with flow, light, and nutrients in the particular tank. I know that by running bio pellets you seem to have more PE all the time than without, which I think is the bacteria/food source that is in the water.

If all else is equal (light water quality etc.) then i would say yes - the full polyped one is getting the amount of flow it likes and other isn't

I have a few different Millie's all on the same frag rack and all getting the same flow and some have a ton of PE and some don't. I know its not a Millie but I also have a mini coloy of pink lemonaid and a PL frag just inches away from each other and the colony has much better PE than the frag.

Different Millis have different sized polyps. Some are obviously MUCH longer than others. Some of them are really finicky, but most of them are no more difficult than any other acros to get good PE and color out of. If all your other acros have great PE, your millis will look hairy. If your other acros have little PE or aren't colored up, your Milli isn't going to look all that hairy - simple as that.

All millis will eventually become tables - so that tells us they are reef-crest dwellers and they absolutely LOVE light and love TONS of flow.

I think it depends on each milli as well. Most of my millis have decent PE but I have one that's just crazy fuzzy PE, it's so long that it sweeps.

I have 2 milli's. One getting blasted by flow has great polyp extension, and looks super hairy, LOL! The other is under moderate flow, and has very good extension, but not as much as the other. Sometimes I think the one getting blasted by flow is getting too much, since its directly in front of an MP10, but as long as those polyps are swaying, I'm leaving it there!

I am having a similar situation with my acros. The base is growing and has new polyps but zero extension on the entire coral. I can't figure it out. 3 Sea Swirls moving the water in a 125. Some are close up, some mid way. Great lighting, but maybe not enough as I have them set for 3 hours on, 2 hours off and 3 hours on during the day with the LED blues running for about 12 hours with a couple of hours off cycle while the halides are on.

yes, i agree, it just depends on the type. some are longer than others. water quality, overall happiness of the coral, can all contribute

I had a problem with my polyp extension and I just couldnt figure out why, I had growth but NO,NONE,ZERO polyp extension on any acro or milli. I started dosing a zeovit product that said it would help with that and I tried it and dosed more often on my regular schedule of coral foods and BOOM now my millis are coming back and so are the acros. I came to the conclusion that I didnt have enough food in the water for them. I get better each day and my colors are just starting to come back. So if your not getting any PE are you dosing any foods? If so, how often?

Can you tell us what Zeovit product you dosed and what foods you are feeding the tank? Thanks.

I will have to look at it when I get home but as far as food I alternate between seachem fuel, rotifeast, and oysterfeast. Everyday they get a little bit of something.
