I'm planning out a custom canopy for our five foot long reef. We are sticking with metal halides and actinics but the mh's have glass shields. Do we keep the glass shields or do any of you run without. We want to get the most light out of them that we can. Going to be lining the inside of canopy in mirror.

This is all determined by bulb type and height got the following from this site: Glass Reef - Basics - Metal Halide Lights

double ended (DE) bulbs - Most DE bulbs do not have a protective protective glass envelope and must, therefore, be shielded with a piece UV proof glass placed below the bulb.
