Hammer trunk disintegrating

Hello, we have a hammer and the trunk is rapidly disintegrating, revealing white flesh as it does so. Does anyone know what is causing this?

We have two halloween hermits, a dozen dwarf red and dwarf blue hermits, a dozen snails

No we have not seen anything chewing on it.

6 pajama cardinals, 1 juvenile coral beauty (new), 1 juvenile yellow tang (fairly new), 1 yellow assessor, 2 clowns

Well, we have only had the coral beauty for three days. So must be something else?

Definitely is something picking at the skeleton.

OP - Keep an eye out for anything that goes under the hammer. The damage is not touching any living tissue and if it breaks in that section it is pretty much fragged for you and you can treat it like so. I would keep in mind that although the suspect is not going after the living tissue now, it can possibly later.
