Hand Sanitizer & Your Tank

Thanks for the Post. I was wondering what the effect would be of hand sanitizer use and then putting hand in the tank. Have not done it - now I won't. Thanks Again :)

Always a concern for me. Being female, we use perfume on our wrists. I'm even concerned when my hair gets in the tank.

Go to bed people, sleep is one of the best things to staying healthy.

But the best I have found is dawn dish soap with hot water. It’s soft enough for a baby duck.

"Knowing that Dawn was not a great dish soap, I wanted to know the facts. I was surprised to learn that Dawn doesn't even list it's ingredients on the bottle. If it's so great, what are they hiding?

Who's knocking Dawn :p Its the best, just ask a housewife, auto mechanic and a little fuzzy duck. BTW Blue formula :cool:

Exactly what I've been doing since getting back into reefing, best idea ever. Not to mention not having to wash your hands every time you do something salty

I am soooo guilty. I do it and catch myself elbow deep and then feel sooo bad about it. Ahhh gota stop it.

Also I use hand sanitizer in general because I have kids and the gf is a nurse not because of any viral outbreak.

I'm just putting out a reminder that products like hand sanitizers can leave a residue on your skin after they dry/the alcohol has evaporated. A lot of you may be using these during current times, and rightly so!

Be careful about reaching into your tank after using these products, as some of this can come off and effect your tank negatively esp. small nano tanks.

Thoroughly rinse and or use gloves if you're going through almond scented purell like there's no tomorrow.

This is a good reminder in general. I believe one major contributor to "new tank syndrome" is a newer hobbyist feels the need to tinker in the tank more and may not understand the importance of thoroughly cleaning your hand/arm before putting it into the water. Residue from lotions, soaps, chemicals, etc. are toxic especially in a smaller tank.

Last fall I purchased a dozen SPS frags at a swap meet. I started testing Alk daily to baseline consumption afterwards. I stabilized the dosing quickly in a couple days. I then needed to moved some Acans on the tank bottom and after doing so (bare handed) I noticed Alk consumption decreased/halted. After a couple days the tank stabilized. A week had passed and needed to move the Acans again (bare bottom and strong willed snails) and again, Alk consumption decreased/halted. That’s when I made the connection. So to prove my theory, I put on the neoprene glove and put my hand in the tank, cleaning detritus, cleaning glass, adjusting the Acans again. I tested this over three days and never saw an upset in Alk consumption. Since that day, I wear the glove every time.

Thank you for your feedback, I have noted as well some alk discrepancies in my readings some times but didn't thought before on this, I will definitely try. I try to avoid placing hands as you can always introduce anything unwanted, but sometimes you have to especially to move things around.

I always have and still use Dawn (blue) to wash my hands. Not because I think it’s the best, it’s just available in my kitchen for washing dishes before I put them in my glorified dish strainer (dishwasher). I don’t use any sanitizer or lotions on my hands so that’s not an issue. I am however, super lazy and hate cleaning the acrylic on my tank every time saltwater drips on it. I use different tools to dip in my tank to avoid using my hands which for some reason let’s water trickle tank water on the outside of my tank.

Ive just been drinking my hand sanitizer seems to be working well so far! Cleaning from the inside out not outside only! 300IQ moves over here!
