Hanna Checker phosphate 713

Hello,

I have been having some issue with some of my hammers and torches looking upset out nowhere. I started to search for the reason: the big 3 are checked via trident and is calibrated once a month but phosphate and nitrate is tested via Hanna. I noticed my nitrate has been consistent between 7-10. But my phosphate was sorta weird to track. I will test one day and will get 0.09 and the next time 0.23 or 0.39. I feed frozen and and nori daily. I thought the fluctuation was a “normal” think. I cannon dose and use an algae scrubber.

I tested yesterday and the checker said 0.23. I went to WWC to pick up some corals and asked them my water. She was able to match up my number using her Sallfert with the except of one: phosphate. I thought I was at a 0.23. But according to her is 0.5.

This checker is about 3-4 years old. Or maybe m ore. Not sure. I thought about buying the calibration kit but basically that’s 1/3 the price of a new checker. Should I just buy a new checker? I checked this morning and I was careful, cleaned everything and the checker showed 0.11 with the sailfert still showing 0.25-0.5 level of blue. This was prior feeding.

I don’t know…..maybe I need a trident np

Anyone experience something like this?

Personally I use the 774 ultra low range since I want to keep PO4 under .9 anyway. It is more accurate for lower numbers than the 713

Sounds like your checker is not working right? Has it been giving consistent numbers up until recently? They shouldn't jump around like that from day to day to that degree.

As for the 'calibration' kit. It's not a calibration but a check to see if your tester is reading correctly. There isn't anything you can calibrate on the tester.

A couple thoughts.

Ensure the test reagent is not out of date.

Test the aquarium water twice in a row to confirm that the Checker test is at least consistent. Maybe ii is mot.

Inconsistent results might occur if the reagent isn’t dissolved consistently during 5he two minute shake period.

Dilute the sample 50% with fresh saltwater. The reading should be half the test result with the full strength sample. This tests the Checker’s ability to detect concentration changes.

Yes, I keep mine around 0.10 so the fact they climb to .50 is an issue. But I had cut back on my carbon dosing since it was seeing a “drop”. Once of the readings came in at 0.06. I test weekly.

I should have mentioned we are talking about 260 gallons or total water volume. The reagent is not expired it close it, I just received from saltwater aquarium and it was happening with the prior one also. The fact the nitrate is does not swing, I can eliminating me from the equation.

I thought about getting the 774 one to eliminate the 2 min shut off issue.

My bigger issue is I feel blind without a proper way to check. I want to add rowa to bring this phosphate down.

Has anyone send in their checker to get fixed or it becomes cheaper to buy one?

Did you ever find anything else about this checker. I purchased a used one and for the first time checked my numbers on the same day out of curiosity and had a huge fluctuation in numbers.

I end up buying a new one. I called the Hanna team and mentioned the issue I was having odd/inconsistent readings. They mentioned the tester are not meant to last forever and they recommended for me to inspect the unit, make sure the vials are clean, and make sure I don’t alter my steps from test to test. Once I received the new unit, I ran both units together and the older one claimed my reading was 0.00. I retired the unit and have it collecting dust. It worked for 3 years.

I always test in the morning around 9am before a feeding. If you test after a feeding, you may see an increase from it. I see increases the day after feeding benereef.

Yeah I made a similar post and a lot of people told me there could be various issues to the inside not being clean to the reagents being old to the vials being stained. By the time I looked at getting new reagents and vials it was only 15 dollars more to get a new unit since they’re currently on sale for 54 dollars.

Last time I used it, it read 22 on the initial test. I then retest it 3 more times and it all reads ZERO so do i have 0.067ppm of phosphate or 0?

Yes, that’s what they told me. Sadly, we are only able to test if the checker is doing what is supposed to do with the calibration check set. We can’t use it to calibrate. That was my other question to them.
