Hanna Checkers

I’m just looking at getting some Hanna Checkers and just wondering if I should get all of them or only get certain ones?

Alk, phospate, nitrate HR and the 3 most common.

Salifert for calcium and magnesium as they are cheap, easy to use.

I'll second Alk, Nitrate, Phosphate. I have Calcium, not a big fan of that one, haven't tried magnesium yet.

Alk I use very often, Nitrate and Phosphate at least once a week and those are almost always all dead on with what my LFS measures when I go there. All 3 easy to use after you get used to them (keep in mind the reagents for Nitrate and Phosphate are basically $1 per test though).

Phosphate or Phosphorus ULR is a "must have"

Alkalinity is easy and fast to use but an actual titration would be more accurate I guess. I still like and use it though.

Nitrate LR takes too long for my taste, and I don't need it down to 0.01ppm precision.

Calcium also takes a bit longer to test and I don't think it matters if you have 390ppm or 410ppm or whatever your target is.

What about ammonia and nitrite? I know these aren’t used very often. Is it worth getting those from Hanna? I’m colorblind but I can get the wife to read them if Hanna isn’t worth it.

Just buy cheaper ammonia and nitrite kits. You won’t need them very often after your tank cycles. I like Salifert. Then give your wife the extra cash for reading them!

Id just use nitrate and phos. Alk is a pretty simple test. Salifert or any comparable test is consistent and accurate enough

Nitrite doesn’t affect marine fish, and for the month that your are watching amonia during the cycle, it will never likely see the light of day afterward. The Salifert ammonia test works well and is $10.

I have all of them but primarily use ALK, CA, high range nitrate and ulr phosphorus.

I know the Ca gets ragged on a lot however it’s accurate enough to continue to use.

I may run a test of all above once a quarter but Alk I test once a month at least.

Wrote a longer post about Hanna checkers. This comes after I called Hanna directly and spoke with a tech person. And got some crazy info to give me accurate readings to the point I have to say the checkers work dead on. Just bad info and cuvettes are put into the kit when you buy them. I know yes all Hanna checkers and only once in a blue moon use salifert to counter checks. Findings have been the same. Over and over.

I like to test alk and calcium frequently so I go with cheaper options for them (saliftert).
If you QT or treat with coppper, the hanna copper checker is a must.
If you have/want low phosphate, the hanna phosphate checkers (whicherver one you like) are good.

Hanna’s mg is almost as tough to use as their calcium test imo. If you get consistent results from your Hanna MG, im impressed.

I think Phosphate is the only one you really need. Salferit or Nyos is pretty solid for everything else.

I've typically done ok. I'd rather take my chances with Hanna vs trying to decipher what shade of a color something is. I still have the nitrate test as i don't have a hanna for that, YET, and i'm always cursing myself for having to figure out what shade of orange i'm looking at.

Same. Im color blind so it’s not always easy to distinguish the titration test.

Salinity and Alk are a must. But they are all awesome to have to keep parameters in check.
