So I just tested my nitrates with a Hanna checker, 0.0 was the result.

I’m struggling to get corals growing, could this be a reason??

What should it be ideally?

I know when my nitrates were <0.2 ppm, my gsp never opened. Once my nitrates were around 2 ppm, it openned nicely. The optimum is 5-10 ppm.

How many fish are in the tank

You could dose some ammonia or just up feeding a bit

Need more info, how old is the tank, what size is it, what kind of lighting and flow do you have in the tank? Pictures help too. Corals need light flow and nutrients to thrive, its not just nitrate. What is the phosphate level? Are your parameters steady or bouncing? Need more info to advise.
