I've kept one for long time in a reef setup with no issues. It always ate well and mixed with other fish. Id definitely recommend it.

Good practice to introduce it first when all clean up already stablish soecially shrimps then add tangs and if u planing triggers also last like sargassum pink tail reff safe cause its a shy fish at first once stablish it will do great

Mine has been mostly fine. Holds his own against semi-agressive fish (PBT, Purple Tang, Navarchus). He may have eaten one of my cleaner shrimp when it was in molt. Do not think he has eaten snails or hermits. I had a perverted yellow coris so called wrasse who became an expert hermit killer, so you never know! Indo, 4 inches, more than a year now.

Mine ate my cleaner shrimp and a bunch of snails... i over feed so that was not the issue...

Had one that ate all snails, crabs, and shrimp which was expected. I'm pretty sure it ate my Mandarin too which was unexpected and a bummer.

I've had an Australian in my 150g reef for quite some time. I have 2 cleaner, coral banded, and peppermint shrimp and never had an issue.

I have been debating tbis as well they are such an awesome looking fish but am worried he will be a savage from what ive read. Maybe ill let the other guys get a little bigger and buy the smallest one i can find thoughts?

I had one for years. Mine was super peaceful. Loved to be cleaned by the cleaner shrimp and never bothered anyone.
Like someone mentioned earlier, keep your tank covered! It was a sad day when I found mine......dead

I had a beautiful Australian one. I had cleaner shrimp and fire/blood shrimp in tank before I got him. He was a model citizen for the most part. Didn't bother snails or hermits. But.......
I come home and out of the blue I see shells and shell fragments all over the place. He began a liking and it was over. Wind up buying some cucumbers until I eventually got rid of the tusk

I agree with everyone, mine was a great addition to the reef tank and would definatlty recommend one.

Anyone have one of these guys in a reef?

I have had an Australian tusk in my 320 reef for three plus years, great fish gets along with all fish, actually quite passive. He was smaller when I got him 2" now 4-5". The key is to get them small and introduce them as a last fish . Also most existing shrimp and crustatians far well but when you add new shrimp instant dinner. It is my favorite fish he kind of keeps everyone in line. Not best pic on the road. Upper right
