Your not alone, I’m also a freshwater and plant nut!
I put just as much work into my house landscaping as I do my reef tank.
I’m also really into comics and gaming and building arcades sooooo.
If my tanks look good, well hell my house should too!
Can’t let the fish have all the beauty right?

Those arcades are awesome! Very nice landscaping as well. My father used to rip my lil brother and I a new one every time we accidentally crushed his flowers with our soccer ball it was every man for himself. Now that I started this hobby and seeing how much time and effort is put into maintaining a nice tank with corals I now know how my dad felt about his flowers lol

Noo I feel that pressure coming soon though hopefully I have couple more years to submerge all my cash into the tank :p
confession
I'm married.
my wife loves the tank but when ever someone asks how much something costs, she puts her hands over her ears and starts spouting "la la la la LA LA LA LA LA LA"

Many of us tend to go overboard with our hobbies, be it model railroading, R/C modeling, skating, or whatever. But 5K+ is probably close to the norm in setting up a nice, large, well-populated reef aquarium....Setting up and maintaining a large reef tank can't be done on a shoestring IMHO !

As I learn more and more about this hobby and progress one thing always crosses my mind and I wonder if anyone else thinks about this as well. When I was younger I used to always want a cat or a dog something I could physically play with and my parents would always say no it’s too expensive to take care of how about a fish tank ? Now I sit here and I’m like if only they knew....
Hahahaha so true! I never thought I would be into fish. I always felt like I needed something to cuddle. But now I'm 5 tanks in hahahaha

Agreed one of my many justifications whenever I mention something expensive that I want for the tank :D

Threads like this make me crazy, at least this is what I blame my insanity on. Thanks all for the alibi. :) If I'd only spent 5K I could afford to buy another tank!

I took a year gathering all my equipment, tank, stand.
That way I had everthing on hand except livestock.
I bought these MH's at startup and just set them up a week ago.
Ran T5's for 15 months since setup.
I have already removed 2 large colonies to make room for something different.
Once you have everything you need the hobby is only as expensive as the corals you want, lol.
I bought all local corals at 20-$60 so they were pretty common ones.
Everthing grown from 1" frags takes a while.
One nub of WD for $150 thats a nice small colony now.
Total cost of setup was still over 4k and I still dont have my stand skinned.
Their are worse things to be addicted to, lol.
This is my 120 as of 5 minutes ago.

That’s a really nice setup!!

That’s a really nice setup!!
Thanks! It is a pretty simple system.
I have only done 2 water changes is 15 months.
1 9gal and 1 12gal.
The 9 was for no real reason and I did a 12gal a week ago after a fluconazol treatment that eradicated all hair algae.
