Hello All,
Im relatively new to the salt water game and im having some pretty big troubles with salinity. So back story on this, I purchased my entire tank set up from the LFS and the owner of the store recommended i use their pre mixed salt water which i came to learn.. is actual ocean water. Before it went into the tank i measured the salinity and it was 1.022 pretty low to me. So i cycled the tank for 4 weeks and got fish/ coral frags in. I measured the salinity again before the fish went in and with the evaporation it came up to 1.023. The tank went about a week before i checked salinity again. I topped it off twice with RODI at a pre marked point in my sump so i knew i wasn't over filling it. That following Saturday i tested salinity again and it came out at 1.018. In new reefer fashion......3 i panicked and topped off as much as i could with said pre mixed salt water. Its been about a week and ive only been topping off evaporation with salt water (running the tank open top) and the salinity will not raise over 1.022 .. Any ideas of what the problem could be?
Im using a red sea refractometer calibrated with solution instead of RO water. Ive been paranoid and calibrating it every time i use it since this issue came up.
